My Story

Growing up as a competition dancer and teenage girl, perception of myself and others has always been subject to my own dissection. My initial guiding research goal was to diagnose a phenomenon I have been immersed in from a very young age, tanning culture. While my experience began from original implementation from involvement in the dance community, social media has led to a societal shift of adolescent consumers. Over the past few decades, tanning trends and methodology have been the basis of beauty standards due to various media attributions. When I began conducting preliminary research, quickly I found a surplus of data surrounding the consequences of tanning indoors or outdoors. However, all of this made me even more interested in the “Why?”. Why has tanning proceeded to be a trend despite the obvious health deficits? My perspective as a target demographic of this movement has allowed me to analyze an age group no [previous researchers have examined.
